Adult Yoga

Can you tell me a little about yoga?
Yoga was established in India more than 5000 years ago.  It is the oldest continuously practice discipline known.  Yoga is a physical and spiritual tradition.  Yoga is not a religion but is often practiced to enhance the spiritual aspects of any religion.  The word "Yoga" is derived from the Sanskrit word meaning "to yoke" or union.  Yoga is the union of the body, mind, and spirit. Four Monkeys Yoga strives to provide classes that will harmonize the mind, body and spirit of each individual.  This state of harmonization will help you feel more connected with yourself and others. The focus is on mindful breathing and movement to bring balance and awareness to your life.

Do I have to be flexible to participate in yoga?
Absolutely not. While it's true that some forms of yoga incorporate more advanced postures, each person who attends a Four Monkeys class is encouraged to practice with care and respect for your body.
  • Always work within your own ability and limitations.
  • Always listen to the body and it's wisdom.
  • Always make or ask for modifications and variations on postures to ensure comfort and safety.

Will I have to chant or make noise during class?
No.  It is not required that anyone do anything with which they are uncomfortable. Some classes may begin or end with a chant to center the group.  This practice will vary from class to class and participation is always optional.

How long is a yoga class?
Typically adult yoga class is 75 minutes long. Variations on this will be noted on the class schedule.  Workshops are typically longer in duration.

Do I need to have a yoga mat for class?
Yes.  A yoga mat or small yoga rug is required for class. For health reasons we highly recommend having your own mat and disinfecting it after each class.  Four Monkeys Yoga has quality mats available for purchase.  Please inquire with teacher.

Should I eat before class?
Large meals should be taken no sooner than two hours before class. Snack may be taken an hour before class.  Do hydrate well before class.

Should I practice yoga with an injury or recent illness?
Yoga can at times be physically demanding. It is advisable to consult a health care professional if you are uncertain that yoga may be contraindicated for your current condition. Please notify your instructor prior to class of any pre-existing conditions that may effect your safety.  Your safety is your responsibility,  we will always make every effort to keep you safe.  Never take part in any posture, stretch or technique that you are not comfortable with.  Always respect pain and let the instructor know if you are in or experiencing pain.
